Product Q&A

  1. What is HK Traffic Time?
A free journey-time web app for Hong Kong tunnels and highways, built on the Transport Department's Journey Time Indicators (2nd generation) open data, updated every 2 minutes and designed for always-on display on old phones or tablets.
  2. What do the numbers mean?
Each figure is the average minutes from that roadside sign to the destination, as shown on the official sign. Green means smooth, yellow slow, red congested; closed tunnels read "closed". The three harbour crossings are covered both ways; most other tunnels show one direction. "To airport" figures are route times including the road beyond the tunnel.
  3. Is it free? Do I need an account?
Fully free, no login needed, and no personal data is collected.
  4. Anything besides journey times?
Breaking traffic news (one item every 5 seconds, with camera snapshots and voice readout), highway speeds, nearby congestion, live time-varying tolls for the three harbour tunnels, and fixed speed-camera voice alerts.
  5. How accurate is it?
All times come straight from Transport Department open data, updated every 2 minutes — for reference only; actual conditions prevail. This is an independent information tool, not affiliated with the department.
  6. Where can I use it?
Any desktop or mobile browser at hktraffictime.com, no download needed; there is also an Android app.

Product details

Description

HK Traffic Time is a frontend-only site laying every tunnel and highway journey time side by side, so drivers check which route is jammed before leaving. One card per signboard: green for expressways, blue for non-expressways, airport routes with a yellow shield badge. The three harbour crossings get a persistent strip including live time-varying tolls (true amounts stepping ±$2 every 2 minutes); with location on, readings automatically switch to the nearest signboard and say so.

Beyond journey times, the home page stacks breaking traffic, highway speeds and nearby congestion, with order and folding customisable in settings. The site only displays data live — it stores, modifies and resells nothing.

How it differs

  1. Signboard-level, side by side: official roadside readings for every tunnel on one screen — no tapping into each tunnel.
  2. Built for always-on display: an old phone or tablet plugged in by the door becomes a household traffic screen.
  3. Tolls next to times: the three crossings compare journey time and live time-varying tolls together — speed and cost judged at once.
  4. Location-aware readings: with GPS it uses the nearest signboard's time and labels the source — never a reading from across the harbour.

Get started in 3 steps

  1. Open hktraffictime.com in a browser — journey times appear immediately.
  2. Allow location so readings follow your nearest signboard.
  3. On an old phone, "Add to Home Screen", plug in power, leave it by the door.

Developer story

HK Traffic Time started from a practical need: before driving out, you want to know whether the Cross-Harbour or the Eastern tunnel is faster — but official data is scattered across signboards and checking each one is slow. So we laid every Journey Time Indicator board side by side, added the harbour tolls, and made a screen worth one glance before leaving. It is made by the same team behind HK Bus Time and HK MTR Time, following the same frontend-only, no-personal-data route.

Story angles

One glance before leaving: three harbour crossings with times and tolls compared together. Second life for old phones: a spare tablet by the door becomes a household traffic screen. Open-data showcase: roadside signboard readings on the web with no middleman.
